Responding to your customers

Promo Openletter 20070906

One day after Apple’s $200 price drop on the iPhone and less than 24 hours after their discussion boards erupted with angry messages from consumers, Steve Jobs responds to their issues with a $100 store credit for all early iPhone adopters, Apple’s most passionate customers.

And with that quick and honest response, Apple shows they really are listening to their customers and their customers respond in kind.

Perhaps the reason I’m most struck by this, aside from getting a $100 credit, is that I spent over an hour last night trying to get my cable company to answer their “customer service” line.

Mike, you are such a fanboy.

You won’t see Palm treating their customers like this. When they tell you the price of a Treo, they stand by it!

  3. Mike Says:

Have you picked up Palm’s Foleo yet, Jeremiah?

  4. Mike Says:

Cody — I’m not saying they didn’t screw up. They should have anticipated the reaction, but you have to admit the quick response to consumer outrage is admirable, even if they were wrong at first.

  5. Jeremiah Says:

Still waiting for the Foleo to arrive in my neighborhood Palm Store.

  6. Dee Says:

What the heck was Palm thinking with that Foleo deal? A GPRS update to the Treo would have been nice. I just bought a Wing last week, but I might have been tempted to get an iPhone if I’d known about the price cut. If only they weren’t in bed with the AT&T devil…

This was a bizarre event in my opinion. Previously Jobs has never reacted quickly to customer dissatisfaction — witness the iPod battery scandal.

And I’m still pissed at Jobs for killing the Newton - handwriting recognition is where it’s at with PDA’s.

Once Jobs killed the Newton, Gates hired away most of the Newton team and now Window’s Mobile has excellent H.R. and it works great. The rest of the Mobile software is Windows crap, but there’s nothing like sitting on the subway using a pen to write a memo (look Ma, no thumbs!) and as you stagger up the urine soaked stairs to the 100 degree heat above, it’s being sent.

Posting a quick update on Jobs’ new found generosity… This iPhone fiasco seems to have cooled the fires so nicely that Jobs has decided to provide a rebate for a similar past situation. Read more here:

Got an iPhone. Where’s search? And how do I edit Word docs on the thing?
